The minimum total number of courses taken is 75. The courses have been grouped on a three year timetable, but its possible for students to graduate from school in two or four years.
After passing the necessary compulsory courses the student can take part in the matriculation examination. In the new system the student must pass tests at least in four subjects, of which only Finnish is compulsory. He can choose the rest three from Swedish, English, Mathematics or Humanities and Sciences.
A small countryside school offers studying in safe surroundings. Small classes and groups make it possible for students to get good academic results. Being flexible school can easily add applied courses according to the interests of students and teachers. It is considered important to have the newest technology for example in data processing and language teaching.
As Haukivuori is renowned for its tolerant attitude towards refugees, school has also responded to the challenge by arranging appropriate education. As a whole, school has had a long history in cooperation with several schools from many European countries.
Several projects have brought students together  to work  in questions of environment, tourism and art.
At the moment it is has an exchange programme with a German school.
